Mother proves necessity is mother of all inventions

Four years ago when Carmen Kraft gave birth to twin girls, she and
her husband realized their lives would be changed forever.
“You’re sleep deprived, and you have these new children to take care of,”
she said.  “And no one really tells you how to do it.”
Sure, they received plenty of advice from friends and family,
but once the dust settled and their bundles of joy were home,
Kraft quickly came to the realization that double the fun meant
double the responsibility – not to mention the mountain of paperwork
accompanying the kids.
“We had notes, like immunization records, scattered all over the
house,” said Kraft. “It was sometimes difficult to track down some of t
he things I was looking for.”
After a couple of years of going through the routine of searching f
or notes and medical records before a doctor’s appointment, Kraft realized
she was going to have to get organized. The mountains of paperwork were
growing as fast as the twins.
“That’s when I decided to put it in a more formal format,” she said.
What if you had a single resource that helped you keep track of vital
information, from medication dosages to immunization records to emergency
contact information? And what if that information was kept between the
covers of a handy book that could be taken along to a doctor’s appointment
or handed off to the babysitter?
Those questions were the springboard for DoctoRx Me Book, a resource
guide for busy parents. Besides her two active twins, Krafts’ research and
development involved plenty of friends and family who helped her tweak the
product she launched this month in locations around Tulsa.
“They loved it,” she said of the friends who provided valuable feedback.
“Everybody that I’ve given one to liked it as much as I do. It’s been very well
received because it’s so beneficial to have the information in an organized
format.”
The first section of DoctoRx Me Book provides a space for emergency
information, as well as a spot for the child’s photo. This section also
provides spaces for details about the child, such as school and activities.
There also is a section to keep track of vital medical information, such as
places to document doctor visits. Kraft said this section provides a valuable
tool to take to the doctor, with a place to jot down potential questions d
uring your visit, immunization records, a dosage chart and prescription history.
“While it’s a benefit to the patient, it also benefits the doctor because
the patient is able to keep more accurate records,” she said. “I can look
at my twins book and tell you exactly what shots they have had up to this
point in their lives.”
Another section in the book provides information on contacts from f
riends and families to physicians and hospitals. There also are consent forms
and helpful links to medical Web sites.
“The book has been designed to fill in as you go,” said Kraft.
And with her two growing twins, it won’t be long before Kraft will need
a new DoctoRx Me Book of her own.
